Millennial Makeover: MySpace, YouTube, and the Future of American Politics (Hardcover)
by admin on Dec.10, 2009, under youtube
Review
“With sound analysis, the authors persuasively contend that the prospect of Millennials going viral (using their numbers, values, commitments, and sociopolitical networking to effect change and demand new political leadership) must not be underestimated. If their conclusions are accurate, 2008 will be remembered as a turning point in American politics. Highly recommended.”
Book Description

More Storms More Flooding!
by Ken Henry on Sep.20, 2009, under business
The world is experiencing new weather patterns that cause flood insurance to now be a necessity for anyone who owns a home or a building. Because flooding is not restricted to the coastal regions, floods can happen to anyone at any time, even without many of the warning signs that once were considered a precursor to a flood.
But what about other areas that are not quite so low lying and are not quite so surrounded by water? Do homes in these areas have any real risk of being taken down by a flood? A simple flood that brings water into your home that only causes even an inch or two flooding in the house can cost literally thousands to tens of thousands of dollars. Two inches of water will impact everything from the floors and carpeting to the items that are touching the floor.
First, think about what would happen to your home even if just two or three inches of water covered your floors. How much of your personal belongings touch the floor and how many electrical junctions do you have throughout your home just an inch or two off the floor? How many of these things will put your entire home at risk if there was even just a small flood in your home?
There are regions throughout the world that are now experiencing a new weather phenomenon that is causing an increase in flooding. Chronic rain can cause flooding. One serious storm can cause flooding. And of course, rising waters from small bodies of waters like ponds can cause serious flooding problems. Anyone can experience too much water that laps at their front door and eventually pushes its way in.
Everything you own could be at risk. Flood insurance is a very inexpensive way to ensure that if the unexpected happens you will be in a position to fix the problem and to financially recover from the incident. Without the appropriate insurance policy, you could be facing an unreasonable amount of money to bring your home back into a reasonable living condition.
With the potential for electrical problems, the water damage and clean up, and the damage to all of your personal possessions, flood waters can turn into a devastating event very quickly. Being left without any financial recourse poses a serious risk to protecting not just the investment that is your home, but the sanctuary that is your home.
Every region runs the risk of flood waters these days. Flood insurance is not expensive and it is a simple way to protect your home in the event of a serious disaster. It takes very little water to do a tremendous amount of damage that can cost you thousands upon thousands of dollars right out of your pocket if you’re not insured. Flood waters can creep up on you quickly and be right at your front door before you know it. One simple insurance policy can mean the difference between being financially wiped out and being able to rebuild.

Second Hand Books Shops Feel The Pinch from Oxfam
by Jon Hunter on Aug.19, 2009, under business
Oxfam is under fire from second hand book dealers. It is rare that organisations feel the need criticise such a well loved charity as Oxfam. But things have got so bad for second hand book dealers that they are willing to speak out and claim that Oxfams charity bookshops are putting them out of business.
Book dealers claim that Oxfam is the “Tesco of the second hand book market” and that the unfair competition from Oxfam is responsible for the closure of many seconds hand book shops in recent years.
Oxfam opened its first bookshop in 1987 and now has 121 bookshops in different parts of the UK. Oxfam has sold over 19 million pounds worth of books in the last year, and is currently the largest retailer of second hand books in Europe.
Dealers have argued that Oxfam is able to compete unfairly in the marketplace due to there charitable status, they get free staffing from volunteers, they do not have to pay for stock and also they get an 80% reduction on business rates due to there charitable status.
Oxfam have responded by stating that there are many other factors currently affecting the viability of second hand book sellers, such as the fall in new book prices due to big retailers, and the ability to buy second hand books online.
Dealers are unclear about what measures should be taken. Do they want Oxfam prohibited from selling books? Do they object to an obvious charity receiving charitable status? Do they wish for free product and staffing to be donated to themselves by general populace so they can make personal profit?
