If you have used a computer in the last decade, you have probably noticed that most of today’s programs are based on Windows software. For most of us this is a good thing. Windows is considerably easier to use than the earlier DOS platform. It is based on easy to select windows of information, rather than complicated codes and commands.

Even though Windows has done an excellent job of making the personal computer easy to use, knowing a few keyboard shortcuts can increase your productivity and enjoyment of windows software. Although there are many shortcut keys that can be used in Windows, memorizing and using a few of them can save you a lot of time.

The F keys located at the top of the keyboard are often ignored by most computer users. In previous operating systems, the keys were extremely important, and handled most of the basic functions. Nowadays, most of their functionality has been replaced with other shortcut keys. There are a few original Function keys that are still applicable in today’s Windows such as the very useful F1 key for help.

The CTRL keys are often forgotten about keys that have lots of usefulness. Abbreviated for the word ‘control’, these keys work with other keys to launch popular functions. CTRL key functions are straightforward and easy to use. Fore example, you can save a lot of clicks by using CTRL+C to copy an item to the clipboard, and then CTRL+V to paste it somewhere else.

The Alt keys are also helpful little shortcut keys when working in Windows. Unlike the CTRL keys, Alt keys are partnered with other function or non letter keys. One easy to remember example is using Alt+Tab to switch between windows whether than clicking with a mouse. Alt+F4 is a quick and easy way to close the current window that you are in. (You know instead of clicking that pesky X) My favorite Alt combination is CTRL+Alt+Delete to launch the task manager and close unresponsive programs.

In addition to the shortcut keys already on the keyboard, Windows has its own shortcut key which it simply calls the Windows key. By itself the windows key will launch the start menu. When combined with other keys it has even more functionality. One simple to remember example is Windows+D to minimize open windows to show the desktop.

Thanks to Windows, using a computer is a lot easier than it used to be. No longer do we have to remember commands, or have a cheat sheet next to the computer. We can simply use the mouse and click whatever it is we want to do. However, to get the most out of windows, and possibly save a little time, it doesn’t hurt to take a few shortcuts.

When the Amazon management team get together to review the company’s performance in 2009, they will have good reason to feel content – but not smug. It’s been a very good year for the internet retail giant – and a lot of the credit must go to the Amazon Kindle e-book reader.

The Kindle 2 was released in February 2009. It was widely considered to be a step in the right direction. Amazon had obviously made very good use of the customer feedback it received on the original Kindle, released in November 2007, to drive improvements. The huge choice of Kindle titles and wireless connectivity were retained and longer battery life, increased storage capacity and faster page turns were among the improvements which were incorporated.

The Kindle’s launch was marked by the release of “Ur” – a novella in Kindle format – by best selling author Stephen King. Surrounded by publicity, the Kindle 2 almost immediately become the hot and trendy gadget of 2009.

Amazon followed up, just a few months later in June, with the release of the Kindle DX. The large DX screen made it ideal for readers of magazines, newspapers and academic textbooks. Surprisingly, it was the traditional world of academic publishing which generated a lot of publicity for the new DX.

The academic community was quick to realise the potential benefits the Kindle offered. Not only would it be very much easier to update textbooks but interactive eduction – pop quizzes and tests for example – would be possible. Academic bodies would not only save money as a result of using paperless books, but they would be more environmentally friendly also – an important factor for such institutions who have both budgets and environmental targets to meet these days.

As well as establishing partnerships with a number of colleges and universities, Amazon benefited from a lot of publicity generated by political bodies such as the New Democratic Leadership Council and Californian Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger – both of whom waxed lyrical on the educational potential of e-book readers in general and the Amazon Kindle in particular.

As bright as things were looking for Amazon, the first signs of trouble ahead were in evidence. Having seen Amazon developing the e-book reader market, other manufacturers were suddenly aware of the huge growth potential of this nascent sector. A long, and impressive, list of competitors, including companies like Microsoft, Sony, Apple and Barnes and Noble, were now chasing their share – and they all had e-book readers of their own in the development pipeline.

It’s a compliment to Amazon – albeit a backhanded one – that virtually every e-book reader in development which displays any potential is instantly named the “Kindle Killer”. However, at the moment, and in spite of all the time and money spent on development by their competitors, Amazon is still, very much, the only show in town. The Nook reader by Barnes and Noble and Sony’s Daily Edition reader – two of the most eagerly awaited new readers – have both had their launch dates postponed. As a matter of fact, it seems ever more probable that the most likely source of the Kindle Killer could very well be Amazon itself. The Kindle 4 seems to be the biggest threat to the Kindle 2 and the DX. Will Amazon release this in 2010?
